The name of the game

For my younger son's birthday, my darling scientist got a Wii console.

As a present.

For my son.

As you probably have guessed, it is not unnecessary to spell out who it was supposed to be for, when you look at who is actually playing with it. There is nothing new: in generations past, fathers, grandfathers, uncles and other male carers have got balls, kites, model trains or cars for little boys, and spent hours playing with the toys.

But whoever heard of a woman buying her daughter a Barbie doll for the pleasure of dressing her up or arranging outings with Ken?

The obvious conclusion you will derive is that men never grow out of boyhood, and deep down remain little children. This may well be true, bu
t it doesn't prove that women are more mature or less childlike.

To me it just goes to show that the toys traditionally designed and designated "for boys" are simply fun, while "girly" toys are the first step in the alienation of females. Women are not expected to do anything but serve and nurture (and look dumb into the bargain).

In the meantime, the family has tried their (slow) hand at old rock-and-roll standards, and I am proud to announce that I have finally managed to complete ONE song. But I'll spare you the sound for this one.

First, last Friday night, against the spectacular backdrop of a Provençal windmill, and in between gusts of Provençal mistral, I sang with the TGGG: the talented young man is my son.

And then, on Saturday, a more private affair: Schubert's 3rd sonata for piano and violin. We had a feast of marinaded fish and grilled vegetables, and more than a prudent dose of white wine, and the artists admitted that it impaired somewhat their performance. The talented young man is my lover.

I sat and knitted a few stitches, but mostly chatted with Fannie and the other women about woolly pursuits, until it was time to make my way back. We were lucky that after days and days of wet weather, it was dry, and even sunny; but not too pleasant to sit out in a wind bad enough, as the local saying goes, to blow their horns off the bulls. As usual, I had forgotten a key accessory: the camera, so I will post a photo of our meal out to celebrate my "baby boy"'s coming of age. We went to a delicious Italian restaurant, where the "patron" fell in love with my daughter, and I fell in love with the entrée, and here it is:

Talking about the revolution

Yesterday in Marseille we had a big event to launch the Nouveau parti Anticapitaliste: a 10-hour meeting with forums and debates, and a creche, and concerts, and a speech by Olivier Besancenot the charismatic leader of LCR. I had brought my current portable WIP, a mouse cozy in purple bamboo yarn, and when I got it out of my bag, Aurélien, a young hothead whose cut-and-dry political pronouncements sometimes border on the Stalinist (but I love him), said, in an unusually tender tone: "Oh,my mum knits too." So I gave him a good talk about the ideological implications of crafting, the feminist issues it is linked with, and was amused to see the disbelief in his eyes when I told him about the Red and Black Ravellers group.

Surprise

The cognoscenti may recognise something familiar in this weirdly shaped piece of knitting. Yes it is indeed a BSJ, the mythical baby jacket that no serious knitter can avoid grappling with one day.

When it is completed, I will post another photo. But as the baby is not due until August, it may be a little while before I get round to finishing properly.

Joyful

Friday night the TGGG had a concert in the nearby town of Salon de Provence. I am a comparative newbie in the choir, but have quickly cottoned on to the traditions, including that of the "fruit punch". One of the choristers had been in charge of making up the couple of gallons that help us "warm up" before stepping on stage, but she wanted to hand over this heavy responsibility, and I agreed to do it this time.
